VARNISH SCRATCH RESISTANCE - HAMBERGER PLANER

1.TOOLS

1.1 Hamberger planer
1.2 Steel plate

2.SAMPLING

3*300 mm long samples

3.ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Temperature: 20 (+/- 3) ° C
Relative humidity: 50 (+/-5) %

4.TESTING PROCEDURE

4.1 Adjust the Hamberger planer’s wheel to ensure the “scratch-coin-like piece” is protruding properly (make sure the coin is turned as appropriate)

4.2 Make sure the sample lies completely flat onto the steel plate

4.3 Adjust the Hamberger planer’s lever to the desired Newton value

4.4 Place the Hamberger planer onto the sample and push it forward over minimum 1 cm distance

4.5 Check the area under stress for white scratch marks

5.ASSESSING TEST RESULTS

Per client’s requirement

Normally, scratch resistance will be considered acceptable if varnish can stand 15 tests (5 tests on each of the 3 samples) at 17 Newtons without showing any white scratch marks
