VARNISH ABRASION RESISTANCE - ASTM 4060: 2007 (WEAR THROUGH) (adapted)

1. TOOLS
1.1 Taber abraser (or equivalent)
1.2 Abrasive S-42 strips (or equivalent)
1.3 Vacuum pick-up system

2.SAMPLING
100x100 mm square samples, with a 6.3 mm hole centrally located on each sample

3. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
3.1 Condition the samples for at least 24 hours at 23 (+/- 2) ° C and 50 (+/-5) % relative humidity
3.2 Conduct the test under the same environmental conditions

4.TESTING PROCEDURE
4.1 Mount the clean samples and set the equipment

4.2 Start vacuum pick up and then the abrader’s turn table
4.3 Subject the samples to 500 cycles of abrasion with a weight of 500 g per wheel
4.4 Remove any loose abrading debris with a light brush, and then use a colouring agent to check what % of the abraded area has been worn through to the wood substrate

4.5 If the wear through area is <25%, continue the test
4.6 Change the S-42 strips (note: these strips should be changed every 500 cycles)
4.7 Subject the sample to additional 500 cycles of abrasion with a weight of 500 g per wheel
4.8 Remove any loose abrading debris with a light brush, and then use a colouring agent to check what % of the abraded area has been worn through to the wood substrate
4.9 If the wear through area is still <25%, repeat steps 4.7 and 4.8 until the wear through area is minimum 25%
4.10 Wear through is expressed as the number of cycles required to wear through min. 25% of the abraded area
