FORMALDEHYDE CONCENTRATION IN AIR FROM WOOD PRODUCTS USING A SMALL SCALE CHAMBER (ASTM D 6007 02) (adapted)

1. TOOLS  
1.1 Test chamber (0.02-1 m3), with non-absorbent interior walls and sealed joints (China Link uses a 1 m3 chamber)

    • Make-up air:
    • Cust-free and with no more than 0.02 ppm of formaldehyde;
    • Calibrated air-flow;
    • Air sampling port of a material which minimizes absorption, maintained at the same temperature as the test chamber
    • Reagents

2. SAMPLING
 1 m2, properly conditioned

3. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
 25 (+/-1) ˚C
 50 (+/-4)% relative humidity

4. TESTING PROCEDURE
4.1 Purge the chamber so the formaldehyde background concentration in air of the empty operating chamber does not exceed 0.02 ppm
4.2 Place the samples in the chamber so that the conditioned air stream circulates over all surfaces

4.3 Operate the chamber at 25 (+/-1) ˚C and 50 (+/-4) % relative humidity. Record temperature, relative humidity and barometric pressure during the testing period. Conduct the chamber test at a given air flow through the chamber to sample surface area
4.4 Keep the samples in the chamber until a steady state formaldehyde concentration is reached
4.5 Purge air sampling lines for 1 minute. At the  sampling station, bubble air through a single impinge containing 20 mL of a 1% sodium bisulfite (NaHSO3) solution. Set a calibrated flow meter to maintain an average airflow of 1 (+/-0.05) L/min for 30 min with time measured accurately to within 5 seconds
4.6 Analyze air collection solution with the help of the spectrophotometer
      

4.7 Round calculate formaldehyde concentrations to the nearest 0.01 ppm

5. ASSESSING TEST RESULTS
