ABRASION RESISTANCE - ANSI NALFA LF01:2008 (3.7) (adapted)

1. TOOLS
1.1 Abrasion tester and supplies

1.2 Analytical balance with resolution and accuracy to 0.001 g

1.3 Isopropyl alcohol
1.4 Powder talk
1.5 Clean, soft cloth
1.6 TAPPI size estimation chart

1.7 Swedish Standards Institution Article No. 21824

2. SAMPLING
2 100x100 mm samples taken from different boards. A 6.5 mm hole shall be made in the middle of the samples

3. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Temperature: 23 (+/- 2) °C
Relative humidity: 50 (+/-) 5%

4. TESTING PROCEDURE
4.1 Calibration will be effected by using conditioned sandpaper and abrading a standard zinc plate. Once it is confirmed abrasion levels are in range (110 mg+/- 30), a correction factor shall be calculated as follows:
Correction factor: ((W1-W2)+(W2-W3))/2x110

4.2  Clean the sample surface with isopropyl alcohol and start abrading. Sandpaper should be changed every 200 cycles

4.3 Once Initial Points have appeared in 3 quadrants, the test is completed

4.4 Calculation:

  • Multiply the number of cycles required to reach an initial point on each sample by the correction factor
  • Average the 2 corrected results
  • Round the average to the nearest 50 cycles
  • Wear resistance is the average of the 2 corrected initial points rounded to the nearest 50 cycles


5. ASSESSING TEST RESULTS

Express the abrasion resistance of the samples as one of the abrasion classes:

  • Residential ≥ 1500 revolutions
  • Light commercial ≥ 2000 revolutions
  • Commercial ≥ 4000 revolutions
  • Heavy commercial ≥ 6000 revolutions
