SURFACE SOUNDNESS EN 311:2002 and EN 13329:2006 (annex D) (adapted)

1.1 A device to produce a groove in the laminate flooring sample such as the one below


1.2 A steel mushroom-shaped test pad with a base diameter of 35.6 (+/- 0.1) mm

1.3 Centring frame with sufficient stiffness, shaped to fit the mushroom-shaped pad
1.4 Appropriate tensile testing machine

From each of 3 laminate flooring boards, cut 3 50 x 50 samples (2 centred 10 mm in from the side edges and one from the exact board center)


Temperature: 23 (+/- 2) °C
Relative humidity: 50 (+/-) 5%


4.1 With the help of a milling tool, cut a circular groove through the surface layer. The groove’s depth into the substrate shall be 0.3 (+/-1) mm and its diameter shall be 35.7 mm (area inside the groove shall be 1000 mm2)
4.2. If the samples are thinner than 10 mm, glue a 50 mm x 50 mm aluminum plate with a thickness of at least 10 mm to the underside of the sample
4.3 In order to achieve appropriate bonding, it may be necessary to slightly sand the samples’ surface
4.4 Using a hot melt adhesive, with melting point below 150 ° C, spread a thin layer of adhesive across the face of the heated steel pad

4.5 Carefully place the pad with hot adhesive onto the face of the specimen making sure the pad is centered on the test area
4.6 Lightly weight or hold pad in place until adhesive has cooled (apply nominal 0.1-0.2 N/mm2)
4.7 After the adhesive has cooled and hardened, place mounted sample into the tensile tester

4.8 Using the tensile tester, apply a constant speed so that failure or delamination occurs in 60 (+/-30) seconds

4.9 Record force at failure and where the location of failure occurred (within the coating, within the glue line, between the coating and the core, within the core, etc.; if partial split, describe rough percentage attributable to each failure mode)

4.10 If glue line failure occurs (steel pad and sample or sample and aluminum plate, reject the value.
4.11 The surface soundness SS for each test piece in Newtons per square millimeter shall be
SS = F/A
F = maximum force in Newtons
A = 1,000 mm2

The result shall be expressed to the nearest 0.01 N/mm2


≥ 1.00 N/mm2
