THICKNESS SWELL - ANSI NALFA LF01-2008 (3.2) (adapted)

1. TOOLS
1.1 Pan or other suitable apparatus for submerging samples
1.2 One inch micrometer with foot/anvil diameter of 6.35 mm +/- 2.54 mm
1.3 Distilled or deionized water maintained at 20 +/-1 ˚C
1.4 Ruler

2. SAMPLING
2  150 x 150 mm sample (with a joint if needed). Each sample shall be taken from opposite ends of the board. Sample edges shall be smooth and squarely trimmed. They shall not be preconditioned. Any pre-attached underlayment shall be removed

3. TESTING PROCEDURE
3.1 Measure thickness per:


3.2 Submerge the samples under water so that their top face is 25.4 +/- 2.54 mm from the water surface. Sample faces shall not rest against any surface

3.3 Keep samples submerged at constant temperature for  24 +/-0.25 hr.
3.4 Remove the samples from the pan and, within 15 minutes, measure thickness at the same points
3.5 Express the thickness swell as the average percentage increase in thickness. It is calculated for each edge as:
((final thickness – initial thickness)/initial thickness) x 100

4. ASSESSING TEST RESULTS

Express the thickness swell level as one of these classes:

  • Residential: thickness swell max 18%
  • Light commercial: thickness swell max 16%
  • Commercial: thickness swell max 16%
  • Heavy commercial: thickness swell max 12%
