STATIC LOAD LIMIT ASTM F 970:2007 (adapted)

1.1 A dead weight loaded indentor with interchangeable feet of variante geometry. The apparatus shall be equipped with a dial gage indicator to measure the depth of the indentation and shall have a rigid metal plate for supporting the sample. The frame shall be capable of guiding the weight assembly
1.2 Indentor plates, each constructed of a piece of 50.8 mm square stainless steel, 6.1 (+/-0.1) mm thick, with one side turned to 28.6 mm in diameter to depth of 3.8 mm
1.3 Template of Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA), or other transparent material, 50.8x50.8 mm with round scratch line centered on the template that is 28.58 mm in diameter, defining the test area, and with a 12.7 mm diameter hole at the centre of the template to draw a circle on the specimen where thickness will be measured
1.4 Dial micrometer

If possible, the central 2.54 cm square of each sample should be free of embossing lines. If not possible, the largest flat, raised area should be centered on the specimen

Condition the sample for at least 16 h 23(+/-2)°C and 50(+/-5)% relative humidity. Perform the test under the same environmental conditions


4.1 With the help of the template, draw on the wear layer a circle slightly larger than the 6.35 mm diameter foot of the thickness gauge

4.2 Measure the initial thickness of each sample, wear layer up, at the centre of the specimen, using the dial micrometer. Record the value to the nearest 0.025 mm as T1

4.3 Place the 50.8x50.8 mm indentor plates with the 28.58 mm diameter surface flat against the sample’s wear layer

4.4 Square the stack of sample/indentor plate sets and then centre the stack under the plunger of the indentation machine. Gently lower the plunger and apply a 70 Kg load

4.5 Remove the load after 24 (+/-0.25) h and separate the samples from the indentor plates. Place the samples individually on a horizontal surface with the wear layer up

4.6 Allow samples to recover for 24 (+/-0.25) h. Measure the final thickness at the same point used to determine initial thickness. Record the value to the nearest 0.025 mm as T2

4.7 Calculate the residual indentation as

Residual indentation = T1-T2

Where T1 is the initial thickness of uncompressed specimens and T2 is the thickness of the samples after the 24 hr recovery period
