SHORT TERM INDENTATION AND RESIDUAL INDENTATION ASTM F 1914:2007 & ASTM F 1700:2004 (adapted)

1. TOOLS
1.1 A dead weight loaded indentor with interchangeable feet of variant geometry. The apparatus shall be equipped with a dial gage indicator to measure the depth of the indentation and shall have a rigid metal plate for supporting the sample. The frame shall be capable of guiding the weight assembly

2. SAMPLING
3*51x51 mm

3. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Condition the sample for 6 h 23(+/-2)°C and 50(+/-5)% relative humidity. Perform the test under the same environmental conditions

4. TESTING PROCEDURE
4.1 Determine the initial thickness of the sample at the centre, using the micrometer. Record the value to the nearest 0.025 mm as T1

4.2 Place the sample, with the wearing surface up, flat on the supporting plate

4.3 Gently lower the 4.52 mm diameter flat indentor until it softly contacts the surface of the sample where the initial thickness measurement was made

4.4 Set the dial indicator scale to zero


4.5 Maintain the load for 10 minutes

4.6 Read the indentation from the dial indicator at the end of the 10 minutes. Record the value to the nearest 0.025 mm as T2

4.7 Remove the weight and allow the specimen to acclimatize for 60 minutes between the removal of the load and the measurement of thickness to the nearest 0.025 mm. This last thickness reading shall be T3

4.8 Calculate short term indentation and residual indentation

Short term indentation = T1-T2
Short term indentation, % = (T2/T1)x100

Residual indentation = T1-T3
Residual indentation, % = ((T1-T3)/T1)x100

5. ASSESSING TEST RESULTS
Average residual indentation at the end of the 60 min period shall not exceed 8%, and the maximum residual indentation of any single specimen shall not exceed 10%
