HEAT STABILITY BY COLOUR CHANGE – ASTM F 1514-2003 & ASTM F 1700 -2004 (adapted)

1. TOOLS
1.1 Circulating air oven
1.2 Suitable spectrophotometer or colorimeter
1.3 A suitable holder rack that separates samples at minimum 12.70 mm in a standing or vertical position

2. SAMPLING
3*50x50 mm samples (all samples shall be of the same colour, pattern and texture)

3. TESTING PROCEDURE
3.1 Obtain and record initial L*, a*, and b* readings on each of the three samples with the spectrophotometer or colorimeter. Mark the exact initial area of the measurement so that the second measurement could be obtained at the exact same spot

3.2 Place samples, positioned on edge, in the racks. Then place the racks into the circulating air oven at 70(+/-1)C for 7 days (+/- 1 h). Make sure that, once in the oven, the samples stand parallel to the direction of air flow


3.3 Remove samples from the circulating air oven and recondition at 23(+/-1)°C for 1 h

3.4 Within 24 h of reconditioning, obtain final L*, a*, b* and calculate ΔE* readings on each specimen at the marked position. Use either cool white fluorescent (CWF) or daylight (D-65) light source

4. ASSESSING TEST RESULTS
Average ΔE* not greater than 8.0
