VARNISH & UV OIL STAINING RESISTANCE EN 438.2:2005 (26) (adapted)

1. TOOLS
1.1 Staining agents to be encountered in everyday use:

GROUP

Mandatory testing

Optional testing

Acetone

Toothpaste; Ketchup; Mustard; Olive Oil; Wine; etc.

Coffee at 80° C (120 gr. per liter of water)

Wine Vinegar; Nail Varnish; Lipstick; etc.

3

Sodium Hydroxide (25% solution);
Hydrogen Peroxide (30% solution);
Shoe Polish

Mercurochrome; Iodine; etc.



1.2 Wetting agent (e.g. domestic detergent)
1.3 Solvent (e.g. acetone)
1.4 Soft clean cloth
1.5 Glass covers
1.6 Heating vessel
1.7 Thermometer
1.8 Hotplate
1.9 Hard nylon bristle brush (e.g. nail brush)

2. SAMPLING
A sufficiently large sample (considering normal dimension of glass covers, if 15 agents are to be tested, minimum size should be 600 cm2)

3. TESTING PROCEDURE
3.1 The sample should be at ambient temperature
3.2 Coffee should be applied at 80° C. All other agents should be applied at ambient temperature
3.3 Apply 2-3 drops of each agent onto the sample and cover each agent with a glass cover

3.4 After 10 minutes (Group 3) or 16 hours (Groups 1 and 2), remove the glass cover and clean the surface with water, detergent, solvent, etc., as necessary. For textured surfaces, a hard nylon bristle brush may be necessary

3.5 One hour after cleaning, view the sample from various angles (particularly with light impacting from a low angle) at a distance of about 400 mm


3.6 Rate the effect on the sample’s surface for each one of the agents:

 Rating 5: no visible change
 Rating 4: slight change of gloss and/or colour only visible at certain angles
 Rating 3: moderate change of gloss and/or colour
 Rating 2: marked change of gloss and/or colour
 Rating 1: surface distortion and/or blistering

4. ASSESSING TEST RESULTS
