VARNISH ABRASION RESISTANCE - PRIVATE STANDARD (S-33 WEAR THROUGH)

Note: this test is suitable for open pore, brushed, and hand scraped UV coated surfaces with a low-build up. Since such surfaces provide low abrasion resistance, a “less abrasive” test, with S-33 strips, is recommended to determine their actual abrasion resistance

1. TOOLS
1.1 Taber abraser (or equivalent)
1.2 Abrasive S-33 strips
1.3 Vacuum pick-up system

2. SAMPLING
100x100 mm square sample, with a 6.3 mm hole centrally located on the sample

3. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
3.1 Condition the samples for at least 24 hours at 23 (+/- 2) ° C and 50 (+/-5) % relative humidity

3.2 Conduct the test under the same environmental conditions

4. TESTING PROCEDURE
4.1 Mount the clean sample and set the equipment
4.2 Load each abrasive wheel with 500 g weights
4.3 Lower the abrasive wheels onto the sample
4.4 Start vacuum pick up and the abrader’s rotating platform

4.5 Check the sample surface every 50 turns. Checking consists in removing any loose abrading debris with a light brush, and then using a colouring agent to ascertain whether the abraded area has been worn through to the wood substrate

4.6 Change the S-33 strips every 500 turns
4.7 The test is complete when one 0.6 mm2 worn through spot appears on the sample's flat (non brushed) surface

4.8 The test result is the number of cycles applied onto the sample when the worn through spot in point 4.7 appears

5. ASSESSING TEST RESULTS
Per the contract
